Glossary of Yoga Styles

Flow Yoga

A practice focused on repetitive movement linked with the breath, based on the sun salutation series. 
Offered at Pure Prana Yoga and Radiance Yoga Studios, Old Town Alexandria, Ease Yoga and Cafe, Alexandria.

Hatha Yoga            

A yoga system that includes asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation to balance the nervous system. 
Offered at all local studios.

Iyengar Yoga

The practice focuses on alignment and encourages the use of props to make the poses widely accessible with the goals of increasing proprioception, strength and flexibility. 
Offered at Unity Woods Yoga Center, Arlington, D.C. and Bethesda.

Kripalu Yoga

A breath-centered style designed to encourage the flow of prana through asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation. 
Offered at Dream Yoga Studio, McLean, and The Yogi Underground, Fall Church.

Kundalini Yoga

A yoga practice of awakening the dormant divine force in the body featuring asana, pranayama and meditation. 
Offered at Radiance Yoga Studio and Pure Prana Yoga Studios, Old Town Alexandria.

Restorative Yoga

The practice of passive, resting poses designed to calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

Viniyoga

A gentle, therapeutic practice in which movement (mobilizing the spine) is coordinated with the breath.  
Offered at Pure Prana Yoga Studio, Old Town Alexandria.

Yin Yoga

A quiet, calming practice in which holding the postures for 3 to 5 minutes harmonizes the flow of chi (energy, prana) along the meridians (connective tissue) of the spine.

Yoga Nidra

A restorative guided meditation practice that invites deep relaxation resulting in a greater sense of calm and rest.
